Guest Cepheus Posted November 21, 2006 Report Posted November 21, 2006 Been having a play with one of THESE today and was quite impressed. Anyone used/have a Navman currently/previously that they care to pass comment on? Am changing from TomTom5 on a pda to possibly this so would appreciate any advice. Cheers Paul Quote
Guest MATT jr Posted November 21, 2006 Report Posted November 21, 2006 we havnt got that exact model, but weve got a navman ICE520 (IIRC) sometimes it takes ages and ages to get a signal. MJR Quote
Guest neil_wiles Posted November 21, 2006 Report Posted November 21, 2006 As MJR says most of the Navman Kit relies on hte time it takes to acquire the signals from the satelittes. I am not convinced that it is any better or any worse than other contenders with the exception of the initial start up times. Quote
Guest gooner52 Posted November 21, 2006 Report Posted November 21, 2006 on our easy to use i would stay with the tomtoms still a nice unit,m8 has one keeps trying to swap 4 my 910 no chance lol Quote

MJR According to reviews, the ICN520 (with the flip up antenna?) is particularly bad at getting satellite lock from behind heat reflective or heated windscreens. While playing with the F20 in store, satellites had been picked up within a few seconds. It has a built in SirfstarIII gps receiver which can apparently work ok behind heated screens. Quote

Guest MATT jr Posted November 21, 2006 Report Posted November 21, 2006 weve tried it in the corsa aswel - which has an old fashioned windscreen --- it can still take ages and ages and if it looses the signal - about 90% of the time you have to stop to let it "lock on" again. MJR Quote
gregers Posted November 21, 2006 Report Posted November 21, 2006 i was always losing the signal with my pda but the garmin i have now grabs the signal really quickly and i havent lost the signal once(yet)and i think i have one of those new fangled refelctive windscreens. Quote

MJR will have to see if they'll let me try it in the car first then, make sure it locks on ok  Quote
Guest gooner52 Posted November 22, 2006 Report Posted November 22, 2006    drive away when they are not looking Quote
Smilge Posted November 22, 2006 Report Posted November 22, 2006 Paul ..have a look at this link http://reviews.cnet.com/Navman_F20/4505-3430_7-32125020.html Like Gooner I would stick with the TomToms with added fucntionalityand with regards to loss of signal due to heated windscreen there is always the option of an external antenna. I found that with the addition of an external magnetic type, the time to lock improved from around a minute and a half to about 15 seconds. Good luck Quote
Guest BagPuss Posted November 22, 2006 Report Posted November 22, 2006 Have to agree with Gooner, Stick to TomTom. Only tried Wayfinder, but since changing to TomTom wont go for anything else. Quote

OK, here's an option that's not been mentioned yet, and I think gives the best value for money (as far as I can see anyway!). I got a Mio 269 2nd hand on ebay (cost Quote

There's loads of good overlays available, and also a validation system so you can tell which ones have been proven. I found it has some traffic cam info that is only a few weeks old! Quote

I found it has some traffic cam info that is only a few weeks old! tried using them last year but the overlay info for cams was sure dodgy - actually had a traffic camera (gatso) marked which would have been visible from our landing window - guess what - no camera, never had been (road had only been open 2 years). Stuck to Pocketgpsworld camera database - seems quite good Quote
